The squares could go finer than pad or screen print needs, but a code under 0.75″ is hard for a phone camera to find at all, so that is the floor.

The only thing that leaves this page is the copy you ask us to email you: send that and the address and the code's content reach our mail service, and nothing else — not your logo, and not the drafts you typed on the way there. There is no tracking redirect in the middle either; the code points straight at whatever you entered.

Decoration is not free. Rounded and dotted modules give up a little ink at the edge of every square, and a diamond gives up a lot, so a decorative code needs more width than the minimum the tool quotes for a plain one. On a pen barrel, print squares.

How small this code can go, in inches

Every QR code is a grid of squares, and the number of squares is decided by how much data you put in it. Each square has a width below which a printing process can no longer hold it cleanly, so the grid size sets a hard floor on how small the whole code can be printed.

That floor is the thing that decides whether a code fits a pen barrel. A generator that hands you a PNG and stops has not answered the question you actually have.

Pad print, Medium error correction. The first three land on the same 0.75″ because nothing smaller is easy for a phone to find, whatever the ink can hold. Add campaign tags and the squares take over.

A physical decision, not a checkbox

Error correction buys damage tolerance, and costs size

Error correction stores the code twice over in a way that lets a scanner rebuild a damaged part. On a product that matters: a keyring gets scuffed, a tumbler goes in a dishwasher, a tote gets folded across the print.

It is not free. Every extra percent of recovery is more squares, and more squares is a bigger minimum size. The tool shows you the cost of the level you pick in inches, so the choice is an informed one.

Two ways a printed code dies

The quiet zone and the contrast

A scanner finds a code by looking for three corner squares surrounded by nothing. The specification calls for 4 squares of blank margin on every side, and artwork that crops it, or drops the code onto a photo, takes away the landmark the camera was looking for.

The second killer is color. A scanner reads light and dark rather than hue, so a code has to be clearly darker than what it sits on. The tool measures both, and builds the quiet zone into every file it gives you.

When the size of a QR code decides the order

A QR code is easy to make and easy to get wrong on a physical item. These are the cases where the minimum size is the whole decision.

  • A code on a pen barrel

    The tightest imprint in promotional products. A short link usually fits; the same page with campaign tags usually does not.

  • A conference badge or lanyard card

    Read at arm’s length, held by someone else, in bad hall lighting. Size for the worst case, not the best.

  • A tumbler or bottle

    A curved surface takes part of the code out of focus. Keep it in the flattest part of the imprint and raise the error correction.

  • A tote bag or apparel print

    Plenty of room, but fabric spreads ink. Give the squares more width than the minimum and check the quiet zone survives the seam.

  • A laser-engraved metal item

    The finest detail of any common method, so the code can go smaller. It is still the camera, not the laser, that sets the floor.

  • Signage, banners and packaging

    Scanned from further away, so size up: a code reads from roughly ten times its own width, which is the distance the tool quotes.

What actually makes a QR code work on a product

The squares are the constraint

A QR code is a grid, and the grid is not a design choice. The smallest code is 21 squares across; every step up adds four more, up to 177. Which step you land on is decided entirely by how many characters you encode and how much error correction you ask for. Nothing about the artwork changes it.

Print is where that grid meets a physical limit. A screen or pad print lays down a coarser dot than a laser burns, so each square needs more width to survive as a clean square rather than a blur that merges into its neighbor. Multiply the number of squares by that minimum width and you have the smallest the code can be printed. That single multiplication is what this tool does, and it is the number that decides whether the code fits the product.

A shorter link is the cheapest fix there is

When a code does not fit, the instinct is to shrink it. The better move is to shorten what it carries. Dropping a tracking-tagged address for a short link can take a code from 49 squares to 21, and that is the difference between a code that needs its own inch and one that sits comfortably on a pen with room for your name beside it.

Two habits do most of the work: point the code at a short, permanent address rather than a deep page, and keep the campaign tags on the destination rather than in the code. Both make the printed code smaller and easier to read, and neither costs anything.

A QR code is just text — the format is what makes a phone act

Nothing inside a QR code says “this is a Wi-Fi network”. It is text all the way down, and what makes a camera offer to join a network rather than show you a string is a payload format the phone recognises: a Wi-Fi card starts WIFI:, a contact card starts BEGIN:VCARD, a text message starts SMSTO:. Choosing the type here writes that format for you.

Each of those formats has an escaping rule, and every one of them fails silently when it is skipped. A Wi-Fi password containing a semicolon truncates the credentials at that semicolon. A company name containing a comma splits a contact card into the wrong fields. A network called Cafe is four hexadecimal digits, so a reader following the specification takes it for raw bytes unless it is quoted. Nothing warns you in any of these cases. The code scans; it just scans wrong, and you find out from the first guest who cannot get online.

Color and shape are a print decision, not a style decision

A scanner does not read color. It reads light and dark, samples the middle of each square, and finds the code in the first place by the run of dark and light through the three corner markers. Everything you can change here is safe because it leaves those two things alone: the corners keep their run whatever shape they are drawn in, and every module shape still fills its own center.

What decoration actually costs is ink at the edge of each square, and that cost is paid in size. A rounded or dotted code has less of each square to survive a press, so it wants a little more width than the minimum quoted for a plain one, and a diamond code wants noticeably more. A gradient adds a second thing to check, because it is the lighter end of the fade that has to stay clearly darker than the background, not the average. A logo in the middle is the same trade in a different currency: it costs squares, which is why adding one here switches the code to the High error correction level that can rebuild them.

Where this tool stops

The codes here are static: the address is baked into the pattern. That is why they never expire, and why the code and both downloads are made on your own device. It also means the destination cannot be changed after printing and scans cannot be counted, so if you need either, use a link you control and swap the destination at your end. The one thing that ever leaves the page is the copy you ask us to email you, and a logo you upload is not part of it.

It also cannot see your product. The minimum sizes here are conservative floors for each decoration method, not a promise about a specific item, and the imprint area on a product page is the number that governs. Once the code fits on paper, check the artwork itself against our artwork guidelines and confirm the colors in the contrast checker. Then scan the proof before the run, not after it.

What size does a QR code need to be to print and still scan?

A QR code's minimum printed size comes from how many squares it contains, not from a single fixed number. Each square has to survive the printing process, so a code carrying a long web address needs to be physically bigger than one carrying a short link. PPI's QR code generator counts the squares in the code it just built and gives you the smallest width in inches and millimeters, for the decoration method you choose.

How small can a QR code be on a pen?

A QR code on a pen is usually the tightest fit in promotional products, because a barrel imprint is often about an inch wide and the blank border counts against it. Short links are what make a pen work: the fewer characters the code carries, the fewer squares it needs and the smaller it can print. Enter your link in the generator and it will tell you whether the code and its border fit the imprint width you enter.

Why is my QR code bigger than I expected?

A QR code grows for two reasons: more characters, and more error correction. Both add squares to the grid, and every square has a minimum width the printing process can hold, so the whole code has to get wider. A tracking-tagged web address can easily double the squares of the same page without them, which is why a short link is the single most effective way to shrink a code.

What is the quiet zone on a QR code?

The quiet zone is the blank margin around a QR code, and the specification asks for four squares' worth on every side. It is not decoration: it is how a scanner finds where the code starts and stops. Artwork that crops the quiet zone, or drops a code straight onto a busy pattern, is the most common reason a printed code fails to read. PPI's generator includes the quiet zone in every download and in the size it quotes.

Which error correction level should I use on a promotional product?

Error correction level is a trade between damage tolerance and size. Low recovers about 7% of a damaged code and keeps it small, Medium recovers about 15% and suits most printed items, Quartile recovers about 25% and suits anything curved or handled, and High recovers about 30% and is the largest. On drinkware, pens and keyrings, Quartile is usually the honest choice, because a code on a curve is partly out of focus on every scan.

Can a QR code be printed in color?

A QR code can be printed in color as long as the code stays clearly darker than what it sits on. Scanners read light and dark, not hue, so a navy code on a cream product works and a mid-gray code on a light gray product does not. PPI's generator lets you set the code color, the background and the three corner markers separately, measures the contrast as you pick them, and warns you before the file goes anywhere near a press.

How do I make a QR code for Wi-Fi?

A Wi-Fi QR code carries the network name, the security type and the password in a format a phone camera recognises, so a guest joins by pointing at it instead of typing. In PPI's generator, pick Wi-Fi, enter the network name exactly as it is broadcast, choose WPA (or Open for a network with no password), and enter the password. Tick hidden if the network does not advertise itself. Print it on a table tent, a coaster or a window cling in the room the network covers.

Why does my Wi-Fi QR code not connect?

A Wi-Fi QR code usually fails for one of four reasons, and three of them are invisible. The network name may have a trailing space, which is legal and silent. The password may contain a semicolon, colon, comma, quote or backslash, which have to be escaped or the credentials truncate at the first one — PPI's generator escapes them for you. The security type may be wrong; WPA covers WPA, WPA2 and WPA3, and a WEP network set to WPA will not join. And a network name made only of the letters A to F and digits, such as "Cafe" or "Face", has to be quoted or a reader takes it for hex bytes. The generator handles all four.

Can I make a QR code for my contact details?

A contact-card QR code, sometimes called a vCard code, adds your name, company, job title, phone, email and website to a phone's address book in one scan. Choose Contact in PPI's generator and fill in what you want shared. It is the largest payload here, so it makes the biggest code: leave out fields nobody needs, because every extra character adds squares and pushes up the smallest size it can be printed. On a business card that matters — a full card with an address rarely fits beside your logo.

What kinds of QR code can I make here?

PPI's generator makes seven kinds: a website, plain text, an email with an optional subject and message, a phone number that offers to dial, a text message with the wording ready to send, a Wi-Fi network, and a contact card. Each one is encoded in the format phone cameras actually recognise, so the phone offers the right action rather than showing a string. All seven can be styled the same way, and all seven get the same minimum-print-size answer.

How do I make a custom QR code with my own colors and shapes?

Making a custom QR code takes three choices: the colors, the module shape and the corner shape. In PPI's generator you set a code color, a background and an optional separate color for the three corner markers, or start from a ready-made colorway; you can fade the body between two colors; and you can switch the squares to rounded, dotted or diamond shapes and the corners to rounded, circular or leaf shapes. Every combination is checked for contrast as you build it, and the download carries the design exactly as you see it.

Does styling a QR code stop it from scanning?

Styling a QR code does not stop it scanning as long as two things survive: the light-and-dark run through the middle of the three corner markers, which is how a camera finds the code, and enough ink in each square for the camera to sample its center. Every shape in PPI's generator keeps both. What styling costs is edge coverage, so a rounded or dotted code wants a little more width than the plain minimum, and a diamond code wants noticeably more. On a pen barrel, print plain squares.

Can I email a QR code to myself?

Yes. PPI's generator has an "email this code to myself" option that sends you the code as a PNG you can see in the message, plus a print-ready SVG attached, along with the minimum print size and whether it fits the imprint area you entered. No account is needed and you are not added to any list. A logo you added is not included in the email, because your logo never leaves your browser — use the SVG download for that version.

Can I add a gradient to a QR code?

A QR code can carry a gradient across its body, and PPI's generator fades between two colors you choose. The rule that decides whether it works is the weaker end: whichever of the two colors is lighter still has to be clearly darker than the background, everywhere the fade reaches it. The tool measures the weaker end for you rather than the average, because the average is not what fails.

Can a QR code be light on a dark background?

A light code on a dark background is called an inverted code, and many phone cameras will not read one. If your product is dark, the reliable answer is a light panel or badge behind a dark code rather than reversing the code itself. The generator flags an inverted pair as soon as you choose it.

Should I download my QR code as an SVG or a PNG?

Download an SVG for anything being printed. SVG is vector, so the squares stay perfectly crisp whether the code prints at half an inch on a pen or a foot on a banner, and it is the file a decorator wants. Use the PNG for a screen, a slide or an email, where a fixed pixel size is fine.

Do QR codes expire?

A QR code made here never expires, because the web address is encoded directly into the pattern rather than pointing at a service that could shut down. What can stop working is the destination: if you retire the page the code points at, the code still scans and lands on a dead link. Point yours at a page you intend to keep, or at a short link you control.

Will a QR code scan on a curved surface like a tumbler?

A QR code scans on a curved surface when it is small enough relative to the curve that the whole code stays in focus at once. A code wrapped too far around a tumbler or a bottle presents part of itself at an angle and a camera loses the corner markers. Keep the code within the flattest part of the imprint area and raise the error correction level to Quartile or High.

Can I put a logo in the middle of a QR code?

A logo can sit in the middle of a QR code because error correction lets the scanner rebuild what the logo covers, but only within limits. Use the High level, keep the logo to a small share of the code area, and never let it touch the three corner squares. Send us the artwork and we will confirm the code still reads on your proof before anything is printed.
