One division, done properly
Resolution is pixels divided by inches, nothing more
There is no mystery to print resolution. Take the pixel width of your file, divide it by the width you want to print, and the answer is the DPI you will get. A 3000 pixel logo printed 10 inches wide is 300 DPI. The same file printed 20 inches wide is 150 DPI, and it will look soft.
What makes this hard in practice is that nothing tells you the pixel width until you go looking, and design software often reports a size based on a resolution someone set years ago for the web. This tool skips all of that and measures the only number that decides sharpness.

A vector file has no DPI
Some files cannot fail this test at all
A vector file stores your logo as curves and fills rather than a grid of pixels, so there is no fixed number of dots to spread across an inch. It is redrawn at whatever size the press asks for, whether that is a pen clip or a booth banner.
So when this tool recognizes an AI, EPS, PDF or SVG, it says so and stops. Printing a DPI figure for a vector file would be inventing a limit that does not exist, and it is the answer that sends people off chasing a fix they do not need.

What to ask for when the answer is no
Most people can tell a logo is too small for print but not what to request instead. A failing result here comes with the number: the exact pixel width the file needs to be for the imprint you are ordering, which is simply that width in inches times 300.
Copy the sentence, send it on, and the person who made your logo will know exactly what to export. If you cannot reach them, send us what you have and our art team will tell you what it can carry.

When a resolution check saves a reprint
Almost every artwork problem we see was invisible on a screen and obvious on the product. These are the ones that come up again and again.
The logo came off a website
A logo saved from a web page is usually a few hundred pixels wide. It looks perfect in a browser and prints about an inch across.
It is going on a banner, not a pen
A file that is fine on a badge can be nowhere near enough for a table throw. Check against the biggest item in the order, not the smallest.
Somebody already enlarged it
Scaling a raster file up adds pixels but no detail. This tool reads the real dimensions, so a stretched file gets judged on what it truly holds.
The imprint includes fine text
A tagline, a web address or a registered mark is the first thing to fill in. If the resolution is marginal, that detail goes first.

How print resolution works, and where it stops
Why 300 DPI, and why 200 is still allowed
300 dots per inch is the density at which a normal eye stops resolving individual dots at reading distance, which is why it became the standard for anything held in the hand. A mug, a pen, a badge or a notebook is read at that distance, so 300 DPI is the target this checker measures against.
200 DPI survives on large format because the viewing distance grows with the print. Nobody reads a banner from eight inches away. That is a real allowance printers make, not a corner being cut, which is why the tool reports both numbers and lets the item decide rather than pretending there is one answer.
Why the true pixel size is the only number that counts
An image file can carry a stored resolution tag, and it is the source of most of the confusion in this subject. A 3000 pixel file tagged at 72 DPI opens in design software as 41 inches wide, and the same file tagged at 300 DPI opens as 10 inches. Nothing about the image changed. Only a note attached to it did.
This tool ignores that tag completely and measures the pixels, because the pixels are what the press actually has to work with. That is also why a preview thumbnail is never enough to judge a file: what matters is the full size underneath it.
What resolution does not tell you
Enough resolution is necessary and not sufficient. A file can be enormous and still print badly if it has a white box behind it on a colored product, if its lines are too thin for the decoration method, or if its colors sit too close together to read once printed.

How do I know if my logo is high enough resolution to print?
A logo is high enough resolution to print when its pixel width divided by the imprint width in inches comes to at least 300. PPI's artwork resolution checker does that division for you: drop the file in, type the imprint width you need, and it reports the exact DPI you land at along with a pass, marginal or fail verdict.
What is DPI, and why does 300 matter?

Is 200 DPI good enough for printing?
200 DPI is good enough for large-format work that is read from a step back, such as a banner, a table throw or a tote carried at arm’s length. It is not good enough for fine lines or small text on something held in the hand, like a pen or a badge. That is why this checker reports both numbers instead of one verdict.
Does making the image file bigger fix a low resolution logo?
Enlarging a low resolution logo does not fix it. Resizing stretches the same pixels across more space, so the file gets bigger while the detail stays exactly where it was, and the print looks softer rather than sharper. The only real fixes are a file with more original pixels or a vector file.
Why does a vector file have no DPI?
A vector file stores a logo as shapes and math rather than a grid of pixels, so there is no fixed number of dots to spread over an inch. It is redrawn at whatever size a printer asks for, which is why this checker reports vector files as sharp at any size instead of computing a meaningless DPI for them.
Which file formats are vector?
AI, EPS, SVG and most print-ready PDFs are vector formats. PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP and screenshots are raster formats, meaning a fixed grid of pixels with a real resolution limit. A PDF can contain either, so a PDF exported from a photo is raster in a vector wrapper.
What should I ask my designer for?
Ask your designer for the logo as a vector file, an .ai, .eps or .svg, with the fonts converted to outlines. When only a raster file exists, ask for one at least as many pixels wide as the imprint width times 300. This checker writes that exact sentence with your number in it, ready to copy into an email.
Is my logo uploaded when I use this checker?
This checker never uploads a logo. The file is read and decoded entirely inside your own browser, and it is gone the moment you close the tab or choose a different file. Nothing is stored, emailed or sent to Promotional Product Inc unless you choose to send it yourself afterward.
Why does the checker report a different size than my design software?
Design software often reports a size that assumes a resolution already set in the file, such as 72 DPI for something built for the web. This checker ignores that stored assumption and measures the only thing that decides sharpness, the true pixel dimensions, then works out the size at 300 DPI and at 200 DPI.
Does the imprint method change how much resolution I need?
The imprint method changes how much fine detail survives, not the arithmetic. 300 DPI is the target across methods, but a screen print on fabric closes up thin lines that a laser engraving would hold, and embroidery reproduces shapes rather than pixels. Send the highest resolution file you have and we will tell you what the method can carry.
My logo failed. Can Promotional Product Inc still print it?
A failing result is a warning, not a refusal.
