Deep etch and sandblasting on their own produce a frosted white mark with no color.

Back etching leaves the front face smooth and places the image behind a layer of glass, which adds visible depth and protects the mark from handling. Front etching puts the mark on the surface where it catches light directly. Mirror supplies its own dark, reflective background, so an etched mark reads without needing a base or a backing board behind it.
