Stone Awards in Granite, Marble, Sandstone and Stonecast
A stone award has a body cut or cast from mineral rather than glass or wood. Granite and marble run through this category in more than one build, some deep etched into the stone face and others carrying an attached plate that is printed or engraved. Sandstone arrives with natural variation in thickness, color and texture, so two bases from the same batch do not read identically. Cast stone, listed here as stonecast, blends pulverized granite into polyresin and is finished by hand one piece at a time.
How the pieces differ
Some pieces are stone all the way through and etched directly, such as the Slant-Top Trapezoid Black Granite Paperweight, whose slanted top angles a 3 by 2 inch etch panel toward the reader, and the Marble Award with Colorfill Included, which ships with one colorfill on a deep etch area of 3 by 2, 3.5 by 2.5 or 4 by 3 inches. Others fuse starfire crystal to a stone base: the Curved Starfire Blade on Paired Granite Triangles stands 5.5 by 10 inches with a 4 by 6 inch engraving area, and its granite bases add an optional second etch position. Others again set one stone into another, as the Sandstone Star Award with Second Granite Star Inset does with a black granite star on a sandstone body.
Materials and decoration
Decoration follows the body, so read it per item rather than as a category rule. Deep etching with one colorfill is offered on pieces such as the slant-top granite paperweight and the marble award linked above. Marble also turns up as a small slab holding a set-in cast pewter medallion or a printed emblem under a clear epoxy dome, and some larger stone plaques carry an attached plate that is sublimated or laser engraved rather than a mark cut into the stone. On the fused starfire awards the sandstone is left unmarked, and the etching goes onto the crystal, a granite inset or a brushed aluminum circle instead. Stonecast desk pieces carry printed or molded copy, and several take one base color plus one antiquing color.
