Why vector versus raster is the first question, not an afterthought

A logo that looks fine on a screen can still fail on a mug, a pen or a hat, because a screen and a printer read an image completely differently. A raster file such as a PNG or JPG is a fixed grid of pixels, so it only holds enough detail for the size it was made at. A vector file such as an AI, EPS, PDF or SVG stores the logo as shapes and math instead, so it redraws cleanly at any size a printer asks for.

Most logos start life as a vector file inside design software and only get exported to a PNG or JPG for a website or a social profile, which is the copy that usually ends up getting reused for an order. This checker exists to catch that mismatch before an order ships, by reading a file’s real bytes rather than trusting its name or extension.

When a raster logo is too small, the fix is not a bigger export of the same file, since no amount of stretching adds detail that was never captured. Why one file scales forever and the other falls apart

A vector file stores your logo as instructions: a curve here, a fill there. It can be printed on a pen or a banner from the same file, because the shapes are redrawn at whatever size is asked for. A raster file stores a fixed grid of pixels, so making it bigger just makes the pixels bigger.

This is why a printer asks for AI, EPS, PDF or SVG and sighs at a JPEG. It is not fussiness. A raster file simply does not contain the information needed to print larger than it was made.

How big your file can print before it goes soft

Print quality is measured in dots per inch. At 300 DPI a print looks sharp to the eye at arm’s length, which is where a mug, a pen or a shirt is usually seen. Dividing your image width by 300 gives the largest width it can print cleanly, so a 1200 pixel logo is four inches wide at full quality.

150 DPI is the floor. Below that, edges soften and small text fills in. Between the two the answer depends on how close the item is held, which is why this tool shows both numbers rather than one verdict.

When a file check saves a reprint

Almost every reprint we see starts with an artwork problem that was invisible on a screen. These are the ones that come up again and again.

  • The logo came from a website

    A logo saved off a web page is usually a few hundred pixels wide. It looks perfect in a browser and prints about an inch across.

  • Somebody enlarged the JPEG

    Scaling a raster file up adds pixels but no detail. The check reports the real resolution, not the resized one.

  • The imprint has fine text

    A strapline or a registered mark is the first thing to fill in. If a file is marginal, that detail goes first.

  • You are ordering embroidery

    Embroidery needs clean shapes, not gradients. A vector file is what a digitizer converts into stitches.

  • The file has a white box behind it

    No transparency means a white rectangle on a colored product. The check tells you before it is printed.

  • Someone renamed the file

    A PNG renamed to .eps is still a PNG. The check reads the actual bytes, so a misleading extension is caught.

What is a vector file?

A vector file stores a logo as mathematical paths and shapes rather than a grid of pixels, so it can scale up to a giant banner or down to a tiny pen imprint without losing a single edge. The common vector formats are AI, EPS, PDF and SVG. A vector file is the safest file to hand any printer.

What is the difference between a vector and a raster file?

A raster file, like a PNG or JPG, is a fixed grid of colored pixels, so it looks sharp only up to the size it was created for and turns blurry past that point. A vector file has no fixed size at all, since it is redrawn from math at whatever size you need. That is why a printer always prefers vector.

Why does printing use 300 DPI?

300 DPI, or dots per inch, is the pixel density where the human eye can no longer see individual dots at normal reading distance, which is why it is the standard for sharp printing. A logo can still work below 300 DPI, but under 150 DPI the edges visibly soften or pixelate, which is the floor this checker uses.

What should I do if I only have a JPG of my logo?

A JPG can still print well when its pixel dimensions are large enough for the imprint size you need, so start by running it through this checker to see its real print-sharp size. If it comes back too small, ask whoever designed the logo for the original vector file, since almost every logo starts as one.

Does saving a JPG at a bigger size make it print sharper?

A bigger JPG does not add detail that was never there, it only stretches the same pixels across more space, so the logo ends up looking softer, not sharper. Real sharpness only comes from more original pixel data or, better, a true vector file that has no pixel limit at all.

What does converting fonts to outlines mean?

Outlined fonts means the text in a logo has been converted from live, editable type into permanent vector shapes, so the exact letterforms travel with the file itself. Without outlines, a printer's computer needs the exact font installed or it substitutes a different one, which can quietly change the whole logo.

What file type should I send for embroidery?

Embroidery does not use an image file directly. It needs a digitized stitch file, usually a DST, created from a clean vector or high-resolution version of your logo using an embroiderer's software. Send PPI your best vector file, such as an AI, EPS or SVG, and we handle the digitizing for you.

Can this checker read AI, EPS or PDF files?

A browser cannot open an AI, EPS or PDF file to preview it, since those formats need dedicated design software to render their contents. This checker still lets you select them and tells you the good news: those are exactly the file types a printer wants, so there is nothing you need to fix.

Will Promotional Product Inc accept a PNG or JPG logo?

Promotional Product Inc accepts PNG and JPG logos, and a great many orders print from one. What matters is whether the pixel dimensions are large enough for the imprint size, which is exactly what this checker measures. A vector file is preferred but is not required for every order we run.

Is my logo file uploaded when I use this checker?

This checker never uploads your file anywhere. It is read and decoded entirely inside your own browser, and the moment you close the tab or pick a different file, it is gone. Nothing is stored, emailed or sent to Promotional Product Inc unless you choose to send it yourself afterward.

How do I know if my logo will work on a pen as well as a banner?

A vector file works at both sizes because it is redrawn at whatever scale is asked for. A raster file has one fixed resolution, so it may be fine on a pen and fall apart on a banner. Check the largest size in this tool against the biggest item you plan to order, not the smallest.

Why does my logo have a white box around it?

A white box means the file has no transparency, so the background was saved as solid white rather than as nothing. On a white product it is invisible, and on a colored one it prints as a visible rectangle. A PNG or a vector file with a transparent background solves it.

Does the checker keep or share my logo?

The file checker never uploads, keeps or shares a logo. Your file is read inside your own browser, measured in memory and discarded when the tab closes. An unreleased logo is safe to check here, and no account or email address is asked for.
