Why RGB and CMYK never agree, and what to do about it
A designer works in RGB or hex because a screen builds color from glowing red, green and blue light. A printer works in CMYK because a press builds color from cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink sitting on a page. Converting RGB to CMYK, or hex to RGB, is straightforward arithmetic, but converting from light to ink is not. The two systems cannot describe every color the other one can, which is why a bright on-screen blue often prints a shade duller.

Why the same color has four different numbers
HEX and RGB describe color as light, which is what a screen makes. CMYK describes it as ink laid on a surface, which is the opposite process: a screen adds light to black, while ink takes light away from white. HSL describes the same color the way people talk about it, as a hue with an amount of vividness and depth.

K stands for key, the black plate. Mixing cyan, magenta and yellow produces a muddy brown rather than a true black, so a separate black is used for depth and for text. It is called key because the other plates are aligned to it on press.
